Trace FAQs

What's included in the Trace box?

Trace ships with the Trace Frame, an artist pen, access to the Trace application, and a quick start guide to get you up and running.

Is there a subscription fee or any pay-for-use charges?

No. Once you’ve received your Trace Frame, there are no hidden fees or limitations on your work. Your purchase of Trace includes access to the Trace app.

What app should I use to register my Frame?

We recommend using the native QR-code-scanning capability that is likely built into your phone’s camera app. Open the camera app and point it at the QR code, and click the link that pops up. If your phone’s camera app does not have this functionality, use a reputable dedicated QR code scanning app. Be careful of untrustworthy QR scanning apps that may try to get you to click on ads instead of the scanned link. Note that Trace will not ask for your credit card info during the registration process.

Do I need to be an Origin owner to use Trace?

Nope! Trace’s output can be used with any digital fabrication tool that uses .SVG files, including vinyl cutters, laser cutters, CNC machines and more.

What devices can I use with Trace?

Trace can be used on any device with a rear-facing camera and a modern browser such as Chrome or Safari.

How big is the Trace Frame?

The Trace Frame is 338mm X 248mm with a usable capture area inside the Frame measuring 263mm X 173mm.

Does my drawing have to fit in the Frame?

Each individual capture must fit within the Trace Frame.

Can I download the drawing once Trace creates it for me?

Yes! Each capture is a downloadable .SVG

Do I have to draw with a special pen?

Nope! Trace works best with any dark pen or marker on light paper. We hand-selected the pen included with Trace (because we think it’s great!) but feel free to also use what you have on hand.

Can I use any paper and pen combination?

Yes, as long as there is sufficient contrast between the and the paper, Trace will capture your image.
