Draw Tool Deep Dive

The Draw Tool lets you quickly create any straight-sided shape in just a few clicks. Use smart alignment or snap-to-grid (in the Design Mode Menu) to make precise shapes, or click anywhere to free-draw a design.

The Draw Tool creates a special, editable line or shape that can be used to draw cut paths to build a cut plan.

Note: Currently the Draw Tool is only available on Desktop and Tablet.

How it works

In a Studio Design, click Draw draw in the left-hand panel. To start drawing click anywhere on the canvas, then click again to place the next point of the first segment. From there click to the next point to continue creating attached segments or click the most recent point again to complete the drawing. You can also hit Enter or D on your keyboard to complete an open line.

To create a closed shape click the origin first point again. Closed shapes are indicated by a blue fill when they're selected; you can read more about open and closed shapes below.

Editing line segments and points

Clicking a Segment selects it and allows you to edit its length, angle, or position. You can numerically edit these in the Edit Selection Menu on the right-side once the segment is selected. You can also click and drag an entire segment to reposition it. If you drag a segment the points will maintain their relative positions and deform the adjoining segments as needed.

Each line segment has two end points. When you select a segment one end point will be represented with a blue square and the other will be a circle. All edits made in that state will keep the square end point stationary and move the circular end point according to the changes made to the segment. Clicking the segment again will swap the referenced end point.

You can also edit Points by clicking on the intersection of two segments or the end point of an open segment. You can then move the point by dragging it or typing in a position in the Edit Selection Menu on the right-hand side of the screen:

Moving the point or a segment will deform the attached segment(s).

Note: to move a segment or point using the Edit Selection Menu, you need to have Position activated. To activate Position, click the Design Menu and toggle it on. You can drag points to the desired location position regardless of Position.

Open vs. Closed Lines

An Open Line is a line which is non-contiguous and has a definite start and end point.

A Closed Shape is contiguous and has no discernible start point. Closed Shapes have a semi-transparent blue fill when selected or a grey fill when not selected.

open-closed

The Draw Tool can create Open Lines or Closed Shapes. Open lines can’t be cut with Inside, Outside, or Pocket cut types, and can’t utilize Offsets on Origin.

Draw Tool and ShapeShifter

Creating custom shapes to adjust a design is now a snap with the Draw tool!

You can combine complex shapes with simple ones to incorporate them together using ShapeShifter:

Using ShapeShifter will remove the point and segment editability of the shape.

Note: ShapeShifter does not fully support intersections of open lines, and requires at least one closed shape to be selected.

Measuring

You can use the Draw Tool as a measuring tool. A line segment will display its length when selected, so you can use Draw to create a segment between two points and determine a precise distance between those points.

Note: When placing points with Draw, ‘Smart Alignment’ will snap to any points in other draw shapes but for regular shapes, snapping is only available for bounding box corners.
