Probe Extensions + Export

The features used in this article were made available with the Larkspur update. More information on updating Origin can be found here.

Overview

Probe Circle and Probe Rectangle and the Export feature on Origin make it possible to capture physical material geometry and bring it into Shaper Studio for additional design work. This workflow allows you to perform complex design adjustments on your computer or mobile device, then re-import the design to Origin, preserving the exact position of the workpiece.

Benefits of the Workflow

  • Design Flexibility: Move seamlessly between Origin and Shaper Studio to expand design possibilities.
  • Precise Repositioning: Imported designs maintain their original placement, eliminating any alignment issues.
  • Multi-Device Access: Modify your design in Shaper Studio from a computer or mobile device, making your workflow more versatile.

Using the Probe Extensions in Conjunction with the Export Feature

Step 1: Probe Physical Geometry on Origin

  • Activate the Probe Extension: To start, go to Settings > Extensions > Rectangle/Circle Probe on your Origin and enable the features.
  • Capture Geometry: Use the appropriate Extension to capture the geometry of your workpiece. This is especially useful for accurately placing designs on elements like dowels or rectangular stock for joinery.
  • Make sure a Grid is created so you can reposition your work later.  Using the Probe extensions will create a Grid if one hasn't been set already.

Step 2: Export Shapes to Shaper Studio

  • Once you've probed the workpiece, tap Export to send your design to your Shaper Account as a Studio Design. The captured geometry will now be available in Shaper Studio for further design work.
Why Export? Exporting probed geometry to Shaper Studio enables you to adjust, add, or modify details with CAD tools, providing additional flexibility for more intricate design needs.

Step 3: Make Adjustments in Shaper Studio

  • Access your design in Shaper Studio from your computer or mobile device. Use Studio’s tools to enhance, adjust, or build upon the design.
  • Once you’re satisfied with your modifications, it’s ready for import back to Origin.

Step 4: Import the Design Back to Origin

  • Seamless Positioning: Import the updated design back into Origin. The design will align exactly with the original geometry captured during probing, ensuring consistency with the physical material.
  • Important: make sure the Position readout is 0,0 so that the shapes lines up exactly where you previously exported.

Note: Any shape that was placed before this import will remain. They can be deleted prior to or after the design has been imported.

Pro Tip: change all preexisting shapes' Cut Type to Guide prior to re-importing the design from Studio. This way the only shapes set to Cut will be the ones that were setup in Studio.
