Cut Path Planning using the Offset Path Tool

SVG files can only encode a stroke that's centered on the path, so creating an accurate cut path which anticipates the width of the cutter can be a challenge. In Adobe Illustrator and similar 2D design programs, you can use the Offset Path Tool to visualize your cutter diameter in your design.

Once your path has been created, open the Offset Path tool:

Choose the offset based on your intended bit diameter. Note that the offset distance will be the radius of a bit for an Online Cut: a 1/4" cutter will have an 1/8". You can use a positive or negative offset to make an inside or outside cut path respectively.

Open the stroke menu and make sure that the Cap and Corner are curved and the weight is the width of the bit:

This technique is especially useful for text, which can have complex shapes that don't necessarily conform to a simple cut plan. Below you can see an example of this technique employed to plan an inside cut on a serif font:

Notice that in the 1/4" cutter example the path curves around the narrower portions of the graphic.

Remember to delete all "simulation" paths before sending files to Origin. These are only designed to get an understanding of how much detail various cutters will be able to cut.
