Lubricating Your Origin's Lead Screw
If your Origin is unable to move in the Z-axis, you can lubricate the lead screw
If your Origin is consistently returning errors when trying to plunge or retract, you can lubricate the lead screw. We recommend this product for this task.
Note that this should only be done in the case of repeated z-axis errors when plunging or retracting—not as part of regular preventative maintenance.
To lubricate your lead screw:
1. Manually lower the carriage to its lowest position.
2. Tilt the machine fully onto its back.
3. Confirm that there is now debris in or around the lead screw that might hamper smooth motion
4. Soak the tip of a cotton swab in Ballistol oil. The goal here is to be able to transfer a full drop from the cotton swab to the lead screw.
5. Apply the drop of Ballistol oil to the lead screw above the lead nut. Make sure the oil travels around the lead screw threads as shown here:
5. When the oil makes its way down the screw, manually move the carriage up and down over its full range 20 times. This should ensure that the oil has made its way into the lead nut threads and solved the issue. If not, repeat steps 3 & 4.
